Philip Stein (born July 12, 2015) is an American football safety for the San Jose Sabercats of the International Simulation Football League (ISFL).

Early years

Philip Stein was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but moved to Maryland as a child. He grew up playing Football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, and Soccer...on the PS4. He didn't play sports a lot due to his lack of athletic ability. Though he loved football he thought he wasn't athletic enough to be successful. He discovered his kicking abilities at 15 and everything changed from there. He won the Starting Kicker position his rookie year of high school and played well through all 4 years. Though the Rams (His HS Team) never won a state championship, his play managed to garner some attention. He didn't recieve a ton of D1 scholarships but he did get a few including Florida Atlantic, Miami (OH), and North Carolina. He chose Maryland to stay close to home.

College career

"He sat his Freshman year before becoming the Starter his sophomore year. He won Big Ten Punter of the Year his sophomore year. His Junior year he won both Big Ten Kicker and Punter of the year awards and was a second team All-American. His senior year he became the first player in NCAA history to win both the Lou Groza and Ray Guy awards. His biggest moment came his senior year when he punted the ball 60 yards out of bounds at Florida's 1 yard line with 2 minutes left helping Maryland defeat Florida in the Outback Bowl 21-17.

Professional career

DSFL career

Philip had a great first season being nominated for both Kicker of the Year and Punter of the Year but didn't win either. He had a great season and helped Minnesota to an 8-6 season and a Conference Regular Season win. The ducks struggled at first winning only one of their first four games. They then went on their next four games including beating the defending champions on the road. His first big game in the DSFL came during the 4 game win streak. It was Week 7 when the Minnesota Grey Ducks traveled to London to take on their division rivals the London Royals. Minnesota dominated the entire game-winning 37-7 thanks in part to Stein's 3 Field Goals. The Grey Ducks then alternated wins and losses in the last 7 games winning 4 and losing 3 to finish the regular season. Philip's biggest game in the season came during this stretch. It was week 12 when Philip and the Grey Ducks traveled to Norfolk to take on the Norfolk Seawolves. Philip tied the record for the longest Field Goal in DSFL History by hitting a 57 Yard Field Goal as Minnesota beat Norfolk 20-13. Philip hit a 44 Yard Field Goal in the DSFL Conference Championship but it wasn't enough as Minnesota lost to London 13-10 in Overtime.

In his final season in the DSFL, Philip Stein was a safety for the first time. He had his first big game as a safety in week 2. The Minnesota Grey Ducks hosted their division rivals the London Royals. Stein had an Interception and a Sack in the Grey Ducks 20-14 victory. Stein was traded after week 7 of the DSFL season to the Dallas Birddogs. He made an immediate impact when he joined the Birddogs by forcing a fumble in Dallas' week 8 win over the Tijuana Luchadores 28-10. He earned his second DSFL Pro Bowl appearance, making him one of the few people in DSFL history to make the Pro Bowl at 2 different positions. He finished the season 3rd among Defensive Backs in tackles. He also was one of 3 players this season to force multiple fumbles, have multiple sacks, and have multiple interceptions. After the season Stein was informed by the San Jose Sabercats that he would be called up the following season. He will wear the number 42 as a reference to the fact that he was taken 42nd in the S23 NSFL Draft. He wore 27 prior to being drafted as that was the number he wore in college. He mainly played at Nickelback but hopes to play at Strong Safety for the Sabercats as he feels that Strong Safety is where he plays best. When asked about the position switch after a year of playing safety he said "I have no regrets whatsoever. I love kicking but I've found my spot in the secondary and can't wait to go to San Jose and tackle some people instead of kicking the ball.

NSFL career

In Philip's first NSFL season he was a starting safety for the San Jose Sabercats. He had his first interception in the Sabercats week 1 win over the Austin Copperheads 27-20. He had his first sack in the Sabercats week 3 loss to the Honolulu Hahalua 40-37. He had both his first forced fumble and fumble recovery in the Sabercats week 5 win over the New Orleans Second Line 17-14. He had one of the best performances in ISFL history in the Sabercats week 9 win over the Baltimore Hawks 33-16. This performance won him the ISFL Defensive Performance of the Year award. He had 3 Interceptions including a pick six to help San Jose win the game. All 3 interceptions were in the 4th quarter on three straight drives. The first with 7:19 left in the game. The second was the pick six with 4:55 left in the game. The third and final one came on the first pass after the pick six with 4:01 left in the game. He finished the season with 63 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, 3 sacks, 5 interceptions, and 6 pass deflections. He finished as the runner up for ISFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. He finished tied for 2nd in interceptions and tied for 1st in interceptions among safeties. The Sabercats beat the Colorado Yeti and won the Ultimus. Overall, it was a good year for Stein and hopefully, he can improve his performance next season. The Sabercats lost some secondary players in the offseason so Stein will have a bigger role this season.

Philip was drafted as the 6th pick in the 4th round, 42nd overall by the San Jose Sabercats. It was originally determined that he would be switching from Kicker/Punter to Safety when he moves up to San Jose but would stay a Kicker/Punter as long as he was in Minnesota. Later it was determined that he would switch to Safety while in Minnesota as well.
